A photo from remains of the Great Northern Portland Cement Company in what was Marlborough, Michigan, near Baldwin.
This company shut down in 1907, and these ruins are all that remain of the plant and the town that was built around it.
This photo was taken on another outing to shoot Super 8 for an upcoming film. Visiting all these abandoned locales has been a great way to learn about (obscure) Michigan history.

Here’s a little teaser I put together for a new citizen journalism website we’re launching here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I have high hopes that The Rapidian will be an amazing, hyperlocal news resource that can also serve as a template for similar projects in other cities.
With a minimal but important amount of training, area residents can become reporters for the project - text, video, audio, photography, or any combination thereof - and The Rapidian will offer four physical neighborhood news hubs with equipment and resources for citizen reporters. I’m so excited to be a part of this endeavor.
